AT RISK – Juniper maintenance – 2nd-3rd Feb 2016

Juniper engineers have requested access to our edge routers in order to run some diagnostics as part of a long standing JTAC incident we have open with them to review performance on certain L2TP sessions and issues with LCP monitoring.

They have requested access to perform this monitoring Tuesday evening between midnight and 04:00 Wednesday morning.
During this time there is a risk that they may undertake an action which may cause one or more of the routing engines to panic and reboot.
Whilst we have resilience and redundancy in place, there is still the remote possibility that they may cause an outage whilst performing their diagnostic work.  We have asked them to ensure their maintenance and monitoring is entirely passive but as with all of these things there is a risk that something unexpected may happen.

Should a reset / reboot of more than one linked RE occur at the same time then there is a risk we may lose routing on parts of the network for up to 30 minutes as the RE’s reboot / engineers have to intervene manually.  The risk of this is extremely low however.

We will be monitoring the work they undertake as well as network performance during the maintenance window and will have engineers on site in case of any unexpected failures.
