LINX Extreme LAN Broadcast Storms

During scheduled maintenance on the LINX Extreme LAN, there appears to have been an issue which resulted in a high volume of broadcast traffic affecting numerous LINX members.

The broadcast traffic resulted in sessions dropping ungracefully and caused connections to other peering LANs to also fluctuate.

LINX are investigating this issue currently, in addition to the Juniper LAN issues they have experienced earlier in the week.

The upshot of the broadcast storms were that our routers shutdown affected sessions in an effort to protect the rest of the core from this unwanted traffic.  Fido customers may have noticed a brief interruption in service as routes re-converged to fill the gap left by the unscheduled removal of the LINX LAN.

LINX is one of the largest peering LANs world wide and is certainly the largest peering point in the UK where all major ISPs meet to exchange traffic over the peering network.
